Ohhh Deodorant… One of the less glamorous parts of working in the fitness world is spending a lot of time sweating! I am in no way trying to complain; I would much rather be sweating and moving around all day – than boxed up in a cubicle somewhere, hating my life, and staring out the window.
Either way, because of the time spent in the gym – whether I am coaching, or working out myself… I like to keep things fresh and clean. I actually do NOT wear anti-perspirant, I understand some people are adamant about it, but I simply do not want to block my body from purging the toxins we create. Isn’t that the whole reason we work out anyway, to sweat? To cleanse our bodies, to stay healthy? Somehow the potential side effects do not seem worthwhile to me – therefore I only wear deodorant.
This KLC review is a comparison of two products I purchased, to compare and contrast. One as a more *high end* product, and one *drugstore* product. I have had both of the products for about 3 months now, and figured I would share my thoughts.
The “Miss” – Tom’s of Maine, Long Lasting Natural Odor Protection, Aluminum Free Deodorant, in Fresh Apricot.
You can purchase this product at CVS, Market Basket, Target, Walgreens and I am sure a number of other grocery and drugstores for about $4-5. It is 2.25 oz, and I still have some product left, however I will be throwing this away. It simply does not do the job. While it has a nice fruity scent, it simply does not do what it says. If I sweat in this, I can smell the product, but I can also smell… everything else. On a side note I should say… I am not a particularly stinky person :). It simply does not do anything other than add fragrance. Bummer, I was really hoping this cheap option would be good, because I love a lot of Tom’s products. They do not test on animals, they are sustainable, and they use good quality ingredients!
The Absolute “Hit” – Lavanila Laboratories “The Healthy Deodorant” No Parabens, No Aluminum in Vanilla Grapefruit.
What can I say, this stuff rocks! If you read the ingredients, you can see this company really strives to create a natural product, the first few ingredients are all from Aloe, Corn, Artichoke and Coconut! The one negative about this one is the carrageenan (a preservative) and the price. $10-14, depending on where you pick it up. I got this one at Sephora – but you can also find it at Whole Foods, Amazon, and the Lavanila website. There are also no mineral oils (which was originally used by mechanics (ew!) can commonly cause premature aging (dang!), and is found in almost all deodorants!), no dyes, sulfates or Parabens! The lasting power is pretty darn good ( I can teach a full day and still smell fresh and clean!) and it really just works! It comes in a variety of scents which all actually sound delicious from Vanilla Coconut, to Vanilla Blackberry (next on my list) to Pure Vanilla! It is not overpoweringly fragrant, but just a nice subtle smell! I highly recommend the splurge, if you are trying to “clean up” your medicine cabinet!
