Well another awesome weekend in the books! It feels like summer has finally made its triumphant debut in New England and the hubs and I spent it relaxing in Vermont :).
John said it was for my birthday, but let’s be honest, he probably needed the weekend away more than myself. We packed up the paddleboards ( Mine a SupLove Escape – which I will be reviewing soon!!! And John’s a Three Brothers), Boyles SteelShoes (our redneck version of horsehoes) and headed for Burlington… A little later departure than planned – hitting the road, and kicking it off with a little Riverview treat ( if you haven’t been to this little hole in the wall pizza place, you are a) not from Ipswich or b) missing out) a Spotify session and KLCAdventures #1 Vermont weekend was underway
We actually made decent time and got into Burli around 10:30, set up camp at the North Beach campground right on Lake Champlain. Fire pit, picnic table and amazing little private beach for campers set us up right for getting some much needed R&R away from all the BS we didn’t feel like dealing with. We also left Brewer, our loveable, but grumpy and high-maintenance Cattle Dog with his Grammy “Chardonnay” aka John’s mom.
Saturday morning we woke up…. Achy! It has been wayyyy to long since we had been camping- and I think my shoulders forgot what sleeping on the ground felt like! Of course we had sleeping pads and bags but both of us had forgotten pillows… Whoops! After a sleepy start we headed to one of our staples in town, Burlington by the Bay Market and Cafe for breakfast and coffees to figure out our day. We didn’t plan anything, and the weather was a little less than cooperative- so needless to say we put off a paddle until the afternoon and decided to walk around Church Street until the wind died down, so we wouldn’t turn into human sailboats. A little retail therapy never hurts, right?
We had lunch at the Brewery before heading back to the campground for a paddle, but much to our chagrin- the wind just wouldn’t quit and we decided to postpone paddling until the next morning in lieu of a little Lakeside relaxing… We grabbed our beach chairs, and some reading material (Well studying for John- doesn’t he look happy?) and spent a few hours soaking up some rays, people watching, taking pictures and enjoying each other’s company.
Once it started to cool off, we headed back to our site, and still full from lunch, we decided it was time for SteelShoes and some DAIQUIRYS!!!! (In actuality it was just us alternating swigs of High West Rye every time one of us nailed a ringer!) We take bets so 3 nail biting rounds later- I lost 2 games, but still came out the winner… And now John has to clean the house- top to bottom ?lets see if he makes good on that one…
Next we cleaned up and headed back downtown for Appetizers and Drinks at “The Whiskey Room” which boasted 275 unique Whiskeys from all around the world, and an IPad Menu to prove it. We split ahi-tuna at Sweetwater’s and then once again headed back to camp for a fire!
Our second morning after a much better nights sleep, we ate breakfast at the Skinny Pancake (crèpes!) and walked the waterfront rail trail and town docks. The weather was on the brink of rain the entire morning- so sadly no paddling on Champlain, we headed out but made a quick Stop at a State Park right on the lake and went for a power hike out to the water! A beautiful hazy view and the smell of spring rain certainly made up for the strange weather and now I sit in the truck writing on our way home!
I’ve got a lot coming up in the next few posts…
